About the project
The Sobell redevelopment project aimed to improve the standard of education and leisure in Aberdare. Approval was granted to close three local authority secondary schools in poor condition over four sites and move to a new modern school. An extension to the existing Ynys swimming pool was also approved, requiring the demolition of the existing Michael Sobell Sports Centre to accommodate a new dry-side sports facility.
