About the project

The first challenge for ChandlerKBS as newly appointed Rail Programme Manager for Welsh Government was to deliver a new rail station near Newport in line with the £3.5 million funding which included DfT New Station Funds.  Through our resolute leadership ChandlerKBS capitalised on the crisis and drove the project, directly engaging designers to take forward the unapproved GRIP3 design, engaging with the Local Authority to support the project and ensure that timely planning consent was obtained, engaging a Network Rail approved contractor to deliver the construction and engaging Network Rail for asset protection.  Through relationship building we established a project leadership team with representatives from the key parties with a joint attitude that failure was not an option.

From a standing start in October 2013 the project team delivered GRIP5 by March 2014 with the station opening to services in December 2014 and GRIP7/8 completed at the end of 2015.  Of the five stations funded through the New Staton Fund (one), Pye Corner was the only project to meet the funding milestones, with Transport Minister Baroness Kramer recognising the achievements at the official opening where she stated that "The design and building of the station has also been carried out in an amazingly short time to benefit passengers as soon as possible".
