News: Pont y Werin - People's Bridge, Cardiff
ChandlerKBS provided the cost management services for the project which completes the 6.5 mile bay edge walkway. The bridge provides a sustainable link for pedestrians and cyclists between the Sports Village and neighbouring Penarth town.
The 140m structure has a steel deck area with anti-climb pedestrian rails and will operate from the control tower at the barrage, opening twice every hour.
The bridge was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Councils, with additional funds provided by the pro-cycling organisation Suntrans via a Big Lottery Fund grant.
The final section of the £4.5 million structure, affectionately named Pont y Werin or ‘The People’s Bridge’, was lowered into position in May 2010 and the bridge is scheduled for public opening in July 2010.
