Case Study: Energy from Waste Facility, Colnbrook

This material incineration and recycling plant is a state-of-the art facility which has made an important contribution to sustainable energy. The facility has capacity for 400,000 tonnes of waste per annum. It will provide power generation capacity of 34 megawatts of electricity which will be fed back into the National Grid.

The energy from waste facility includes a tipping hall, material recovery facility, bunker area, boiler hall, administration building, flue gas scrubber and baghouse filter area, a stream turbine and visitor centre.

Located near Heathrow, the building stands 42m high and 130m long with an impressive sloping ovoid shape roof and a 75m high ornate chimney which dominates the view south of the M25/M4 junction.
